Private Mention vs. Direct Message

How do determine whether a message is a "private mention" vs. a "direct message?"

I notice that if the system thinks that the message is a "private mention" the recipient does not get all of the following replies, but if the system thinks it is a "direct message" then the recipient gets all of the replies.

How do you create a direct message instead of accidentally creating a private mention?

Can you provide a path to reproduce the issue you are seeing?

I haven't figured out what triggers it. It seems to be random but I don't send and receive many direct messages. I am sure there is a reason though. The problem seems to be both incoming and outgoing.

I did notice that the #^notifications screen labels one as "Someone tagged you in a post" and the other one as "Someone has sent you a direct message." So Hubzilla is distinguishing between the two, at least on the notifications screen.

It also might be a version mismatch. The two instances were running different versions of Hubzilla. I'll try testing between two instances of the same version and see if I can recreate the issue. It might take me a few days to get time to update all of my hubs (and reinstall in some cases).
