Threads had a very nice presentation at #
FediForum about how they are integrating with the Fediverse. I am very interested to see what they are doing and I think that it will be a net gain for the fediverse, especially at this stage where we are relatively unknown.
I did not really hear much of this at the conference itself, but an ongoing concern that I hear from people on the fediverse is that one organization, whether that be Meta or Mastodon or someone else, gains so much influence on the standards and network that everyone is forced to do it their way. Some are concerned that, whether intentional or unintentional, we may see attempts at embrace, extend, and extinguish, which results in the small players being pushed out.
These are valid concerns, but there are solutions to this. But we will need to step up to the plate to implement these solutions.
We will need associations, foundations, coalitions, cooperatives, and individuals to help lay the foundation of an open network. And, probably more importantly, we should strive for cooperation and collaboration instead of centralization.
We don't need some all powerful fediverse organization that tells everyone how to implement things. But we do need to work together so we can achieve great things at scale without getting burned out or having single points of failure, all the while being able to fund our work.
The enthusiasm of the people that I met at FediForum gives me hope that we can come together and create great things. But it will take a bit of organization and require some thinking out of the box to make this happen.
I am here as a resource, and would love to help in any way I can.
