Hubzilla on shared web hosting server

For a tutorial I checked today again how to set up a HZ hub on a shared web hosting server. - so with no comandline available.

I´m not sure if it all worked out 100%.

php was set by the installation script to
App::$config['system']['php_path'] = '/opt/php-8.0/bin//php';
does this seam right?

How can i run a test to see if the cron job is set up right?

but i´m not sure about

/pubstream

AP addon is activated and I can contact mastodon Accounts but they don´t respond. Actually if i try to find my new HZ Account on this new hub from a Mastodon server it will get NOT found by Mastodon. What could be the reason for that?

One of the possibilities you have... You could look into

/etc/crontab

and execute the command(s) in /etc/crontab from a shell (console) and watch the output of these commands.

The PHP version will depend on your server and what version of PHP your account is set up to use. I am not sure about the rest of the syntax since I have never tried to manually install Hubzilla on shared hosting.

Does your web host have cPanel, Plesk, or another control panel? Many web hosts have Softalicious as an addon, which is a script installer, and it can install Hubzilla for you and even update it. That is by far the easiest way to install Hubzilla.

My main problems with Hubzilla not getting responses was caused by wing php paths. The path with two dashs looks like nonsense. You should check your host's php path and modify this setting in the config.

I tried a few times with Softalicious on Hostgator (not the current version), but couldn't get it to install.

Softalicious is fine but not every hoster offers this script...

The option to install HZ / Zap manually on a shared host is actually a very remarkably option that´s why i tried again... my fist hub many year ago was installed like that, and it worked for a wile... updates had to be done by overwriting files but by saving .htconfig.php and the storefolder.

HostGator servers have security mods that interfere with some scripts. Or at least they did when I worked there years ago. If you contact support, they might give your site an exception if you tell them what you are installing.

@RockyIII If you are using netcup.de you have to change/define the open_basedir when changing the php version to > 8.0. -> php Settings in netcup customercontrolpanel.

My experiences...

I run my Hubzilla hub with one of these VPS https://www.netcup.de/vserver/vps.php#v-server-details. You can install our own OS and get root access to this OS. Everything is under your control then. Makes things easier in my eyes - at least for running a webserver, db,.... It starts with 2,99€/m - fair pricing in my eyes. I can only recommend this solution.

Because there are some Germans discussing this topic, here another experience.... Recently I switched from Telekom to M-Net at home. To my surprise my webserver (Raspi/Roadhouse connected to the Fritzbox) could not be reached via HTTP and SSH. The domain was correctly resolved to the dynamic IP address. Ping was successful. (I have a dynDNS from selfHost.de. They provide a script that is called by a cron job on my raspi. Everything was installed automatically by the homeinstall script.) The cause: M-Net does not serve dynamic IP4 by default and wants 4,90€/m. Compare this with the prices from netcup for example. At least I still have the advantage that the server is in my own flat.

I have a hub on a Raspi and an other one on a VPS now but for "selfhosting beginners" a share host solution is more easy and therefor better for a start, that is way i looked again how this works.

Actually there are now some hosters who offer ssh with a share web hosting package and this could be an other helping option for "self-hosting beginners" even so they have to learn about ssh a bit... well, just the basics

How do you do your backup with Netcup? On Hetzner you could have a daily backup for an extra fee, but Netcup hasn't this feature, as I remember.

My shared webhosting does daily backups for free, but charges for restoribg them. So it's better to do yourself (SSH and FTP users are included).
