Thanksgiving. A sometimes controversial holiday to those who don't understand the context behind it.
In school, when I was younger, they taught the meaning of Thanksgiving in the context of things like the Trail of Tears. If you don't know what that is, look it up. We were taught about what happened and why something like that should have never happened and should never happen again.
Thanksgiving represents a moment of peace in a era of conflict and death. It was trying to tell people that we should get along instead of fight each other.
I am not sure what they teach in school now, but the existence of Thanksgiving was never meant to whitewash what happened. It was meant to highlight that we could have had peace and broken bread together instead of war and what eventually turned into an attempt at genocide.
