There are ways to help protect marginalized communities as well as privacy-loving communities, but it would either require changing how certain fediverse software works, or will require people to switch software.
Some features that would be required include:
- Threaded conversations where the person who started to post can turn off comments.
- The ability to create discussion groups and forums with limited membership. People banned from the forum or group can't post to the group.
- The ability to create private channels, discussion groups, and forums, where only members or approved followers can see the posts.
- Better moderation tools for both administrators and individual users. And these tools should go beyond just the ability to block someone.
The reality is that the pre-X Twitter model of social media is great for promoting interaction, but not very good at moderation.
If we give users more options for privacy and better moderation tools, people would be more protected from malicious people and trolls.
